Sesame Street Introduces Homeless Character

The character, Lily, was  introduced back in 2011 as a 7 year old living in poverty with her family who were ‘food insecure’. Lily storyline is changing…

“Lily is the first Muppet we’ve created whose storyline includes that she is experiencing homelessness,” said Sherrie Westin, president of global impact and philanthropy for Sesame Workshop, formerly Children’s Television Workshop, which is the nonprofit behind “Sesame Street.”

The character’s life will not appear in the TV show as of now, but she will be sharing her story of family homelessness in separate educational videos and materials as a means of ‘humanizing the experience of homelessness.’

Sesame Street have been introducing new characters throughout the show’s history as a way to connect one another and provide understanding for those living with autism, HIV and AIDS.
