“I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song…But here I am, next to you, the sky so blue, in Malibu.” These are the words Miley Cyrus sings in her brand new single ‘Malibu’.

On the morning of the songs release, we spoke to Miley about the nerves and excitement she was feeling putting new music out in to the world.

“I’m laying her in Malibu now, and the first day of me really getting to start this process of releasing this music, and introducing people to my new sound. I’ve been spending my morning talking to people all around the world…and, it’s very ironic and also perfect for me, because I really wanted this song to make people that don’t spend every morning walking up to the beach, to feel like they’re apart of that and my life.”

The song is a new musical direction for Miley, and she explained “even though I’m so far from what I’ve been on TV, or right now I feel very far from the person that slid down my own tongue, and flew around on a giant hot dog. I feel very different from the person who dressed as a unicorn on my last tour…but, those people are me, and I think all those parts of me are in this music.”

Miley spoke about a certain sense of vulnerability she feels with this new song, “even though I seem like [the type of person] to not care what people think and just really try to make myself happy, it’s going to be a very weird feeling for [for people to hear] this song that I wrote last June…people are finally going to listen to it and it’s a song that I’ve known and loved a lot for a year and it’s always a little bit intense sharing that with people.”

In a separate interview with Billboard that was published earlier this week, Miley described ‘Malibu’ as a love ballad to her fiancé Liam Hemsworth; the two broke up in 2013 and then got back together in 2016.

Miley revealed that after writing ‘Malibu’ her and Liam needed to “refall for each other.”

She added, “They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”

She wrote the song, “on the way to The Voice. I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber, and I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car.”

But as Miley told us, ‘Malibu’ isn’t just a song about love, it’s a song about freedom and nature.

“This song, even though it’s called ‘Malibu’, it’s about my love for nature and it’s also about my love for freedom. One of the lines says, ‘Now I’m as free as birds catch in the wind’  and to me this song is an extension of Happy Hippy” (Happy Hippy is Miley’s nonprofit organization that aims to help homeless and LGTBQ youth fight injustice).

She added, “even though [on ‘Malibu’] I’m not singing about LGBTQ rights, which is really the basis of our foundation or singing about homelessness, hopefully in my words and in my lyrics I am professing, speaking and preaching love and to feel free, so really when this song got turned into an honest love song, it really is about my love for life and for nature [that’s] really what this is about.”

‘Malibu’ is the first single from her upcoming album (as of yet it’s untitled but it will be released later this year) and according to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, “this is Miley leaning into her roots more than I’ve ever heard.”

Miley’s new album will hit a bit of a political nerve (she was a staunch Bernie Sanders supporter, but then put her support behind Hillary Clinton when she won the Democratic nomination). But rather than be ‘preachy’, Miley hopes to spread a lot of love with her new project, “This record is a reflection of the fact that yes, I don’t give a f**k, but right now is not a time to not give a f**k about people…I’m giving the world a hug and saying, ‘Hey, look. We’re good — I love you.’ And I hope you can say you love me back.”

‘Malibu’ was written by Miley herself and produced by Oren Yoel (he helped write Miley’s ‘Adore You’).

We won’t have to wait long to hear or see Miley perform ‘Malibu’ as she is set to take the stage at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards which take place on Sunday, May 21st!
