Staying cool during a heatwave is crucial for comfort and health. Here are some strategies and tips to help you keep cool:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate you.
  2. Wear Light Clothing: Opt for lightweight, light-coloured, and loose-fitting clothing. Cotton is often a good choice.
  3. Use Fans or Air Conditioning: If you have them, make sure they are in working condition. Remember to keep doors and windows closed when using an air conditioner.
  4. Take Cool Showers or Baths: A quick cool shower or bath can help reduce your body temperature.
  5. Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  6. Use Shade and Umbrellas: If you need to be outside, stay in the shade or use an umbrella.
  7. Cool Your Skin with a Damp Cloth: Place a damp cloth or have a spray bottle of water to mist your skin.
  8. Eat Light: Heavy meals can add to your body heat. Opt for salads, fruits, and other cool, light meals.
  9. Avoid Cooking: The stove and oven can heat up your living space. If possible, eat cold meals or use the microwave.
  10. Keep Blinds and Curtains Closed: This can block out the sun and help keep your living space cooler.
  11. Use Ceiling Fans: If you have them, make sure they’re set to rotate counterclockwise during the summer.
  12. Stay on the Lowest Floor: Heat rises, so the lowest floor of your home will typically be the coolest.
  13. Insulate Your Home: Make sure your home is well insulated to keep the heat out and the cool in.
  14. Use Reflective Window Film: This can help reflect the sun’s rays away from your home, reducing the greenhouse effect inside your living space.
  15. Create Cross-Ventilation: If the temperature outside is cooler than inside, especially during the night, open windows on opposite sides of your home to create cross-ventilation.
  16. Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and alerts to stay informed about the heatwave’s duration and any safety recommendations.
  17. Plant Trees or Install Awnings: These can provide shade and cool down the surroundings.
  18. Place a Bowl of Ice in Front of a Fan: As the ice melts, the fan will blow cooler air.
  19. Stay at Air-conditioned Public Places: If you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider spending time at public places like malls, libraries, or community centers.
  20. Stay Calm and Relaxed: Avoid strenuous activities, and try to keep your body and mind calm.
  21. Check on Vulnerable People: Older adults, young children, and people with chronic illnesses are more vulnerable to the effects of heat. Make sure they are okay and have ways to stay cool.

Always remember that excessive heat can be dangerous, leading to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Be aware of the symptoms of these conditions, such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. If you or someone else is feeling these symptoms, it’s important to cool down and seek medical attention if necessary.
