Selena Gomez along with her mother Mandy Teefey and Newsette co-founder Daniella Pierson sit down with Good Morning America, where they talk about their online mental health platform, WonderMind.

“There are places where people go when they need help, and it’s unfortunate that they cost ridiculous amounts of money.  But [as with] Planned Parenthood, there’s a place for women to feel okay and to feel understood, and I want that for mental health. I think it’s so important and I can’t stress it enough how much I care and how much I really, really want people to be understood, seen, and heard,” Selena explained

 

“Wondermind is not just for people who have a diagnosed mental illness — this is for anyone who has feelings.  It’s for anyone who ever feels sad, lonely, scared, anxious, and we’re really not labelling anybody,” Daniella adds.

In 2020, Selena revealed she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and said that ‘learning about her mental health diagnosis had a positive impact,’ “I just found that it was really freeing to have the information, to kind of know what’s going on. It didn’t scare me.  I started to have a relationship with myself, and I think that’s the best part. I’ve probably been the happiest I’ve ever been. My mom knows. And it’s just been really wonderful, but it’s work and you do it every day.”

 

Selena also struggles with anxiety, which only ever acted up when she was under the spotlight, “I can’t believe that I’m where I am mentally, just because of how I took the necessary steps in order to kind of remove myself from that … because it’s just not normal,” she says.

And with 310 million Instagram followers – once named the most followed person on the platform, it looks as though Selena hasn’t logged on to Instagram, or the internet, in almost five years, “I haven’t been on the internet in four and a half years.  It has changed my life completely.  I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people.  It makes me feel normal.”

 

 

 

Daniella also clarified that although ‘WonderMind offers helpful resources, it’s not a replacement for a therapist.  The platform also offers exercises, tools, resources and more.
