Ed Sheeran reveals how Justin Bieber wound up with “Love Yourself” and “Cold Water” during interview with Carson Daly.

“Love Yourself” which became a massive hit for Bieber and his Purpose album was originally intended for Ed Sheeran’s upcoming third LP, Divide.

“That was a song I had written for Divide. It just wouldn’t have made it. And then Justin took it and did his thing on it, and released it as a single and made it what it is. So going from a song that would have never been released to [being] the biggest song of last year… it just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off.”

“Love Yourself” isn’t the only song that wound up in Bieber’s hands… “Cold Water” was another one said to be half-written by Sheeran. He says it was a song he’d completely forgotten about until he heard it, saw it shoot up the charts and received a ton of e-mails about it.

“‘Oh, that song!’ I remember doing it, but it was really, really slow. I remember hearing it and being like ‘That kind of sounds like me. Oh wait, it was me.'”

After a year long social media hiatus, Ed Sheeran returned to the spotlight last week releasing two new tracks off the highly anticipated third album titled Divide. Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill” have just broken records for the highest-ever ‘day one’ streams on Spotify beating One Direction. Within 24 hours of their release, the songs garnered over 13 million plays making Ed Sheeran the most streamed artist across the platform (ahead of The Weeknd and Drake).
